As promised bringing you some helpful tips and truths. This is a continuation from the previous #MIGRANT GOALS. Enjoy…
1) DONT RELY ON ASSUMPTIONS
When I first moved to the states like most migrants I didn’t have a plan. Nope, I just ASSUMED that once I was done with school, I will find a job, the job will file me a H1B work visa and I will live happily ever after. The end. HA! what a JOKE!! lets say I (like most immigrants) was in for a RUDE awakening. It doesn’t work that way for most people, do not assume anything. Ask questions, do your due diligence to get the information you need, start if possible from your sophomore year looking at companies you want to work with and if they will be willing to file H1B work visa, do not wait till you have graduated to start looking into that!
Always make sure you are thinking of what lies ahead. The next phase, the next step.
2) DONT COMPARE YOURSELF TO SALLY OR JOHN
Moving to America for me was a blessing but it did not come easy (am not about to sit here and lie to you that it was a walk in the park). There were VERY many challenging moments. My first year I cried almost everyday lol no kidding.
Comparison is the thief of joy, we have all heard that saying so many times. It’s hard sometimes not to compare yourself to the next person, lets just be real. The reasons why comparing yourself to the next person will only lead you to depression is because both of you are going down different paths. Please do not compare your struggle to the “seemly” success of a citizen. Know what you came here for, focus on that. They have advantages that you may not have, do not drown yourself in self-pity or wishful thinking. Instead celebrate your bravery. YOU left all that was familiar and comfortable to start a new life. That my friend is not an easy task.
Now most of you know me already, and you should have seen this one coming. I am a huge advocate of staying healthy. Physically, mentally, spiritually and every other ‘-ally’ you can think of (yes I made that up). We need to understand as migrants how important our health is. You are the only You there will ever be in this world and believe it or not the world needs you. The world needs you heathy, to do the amazing things only you can do :*
4) DONT BE TOO HARD ON YOURSELF
Here’s the truth, if you could change your situation and make it perfect you will. However clearly, somethings are way beyond your control. All you can do is try your best and leave the rest. If you made a mistake, you made a bad choice, you failed at something etc. ITS OKAY. learn from it and move on. Life is full of challenges and tough moments. You are not only amazing and awesome and unique and great but you have everything built in you to handle whatever life throws at you, my dear migrant.
